Training for a race

In September you enter the Harborline Half Marathon, in November. Here's what Junior keeps track of between then and the start line.

  1. 01 · The night you enter

    Every run on the calendar

Make a program called Harborline Half Marathon and give it the race date, Sunday, November 15.

Open your Easy run workout and schedule it for Tuesdays and Thursdays, until the Thursday before the race. Junior puts it on your calendar 20 times, each one an ordinary calendar event, and tells you so. Do the same for Sunday's long run.

Scheduling the Easy run: first date September 8, the Harborline Half Marathon program, Tuesday and Thursday picked, until November 12, and the answer that it was added to the calendar 20 times.
  2. 02 · A rainy Tuesday

A Garmin file, not a connection

Tuesday's run is on the treadmill. Junior doesn't connect to Garmin. Download the run from Garmin Connect, a .fit file or a .zip of them, and upload it in Junior's chat.

It fills Tuesday's planned easy run: distance, time, pace, heart rate, cadence and the mile splits, marked done. The same run uploaded twice is refused.

Tuesday's easy run from a Garmin file: 5.02 miles in 48 minutes at 9:30 a mile, average heart rate 141, a note that there's no route because it was recorded without GPS, cadence, stride, 512 calories and five mile splits.
  3. 03 · Saturday mornings

    Your weigh-ins, in Health

Add your weight in Health, typed in or from your scale app's CSV export. Resting heart rate goes in the same way.

Health's readings page shows where each number stands, and how it moved over 7, 30 and 90 days.

Health's readings: weight 170.7 pounds, down 1.7 over 90 days, resting heart rate 49, down 3, then body fat and sleep, each with its 7, 30 and 90 day change.
  4. 04 · Tuesday night

    Dinner from Kitchen counts

Make the lemon chicken pasta from your Kitchen recipes and say you ate it. Recipes in Kitchen carry nutrition per serving, from the recipe's own label or an estimate from its ingredients, so it arrives with its calories and protein.

Health adds up the day: what you ate against what you burned, with the run's calories taken from the Garmin file.

Tuesday in Health: 1,810 calories in across breakfast, lunch and the lemon chicken pasta marked as the recipe's figure, calories out with the easy run's 512 from the Garmin file, and protein, carbs, fiber, sugar and sodium against goals.
  5. 05 · Two weeks out

    Race weekend is a trip

Make a trip for the weekend with one leg in Harborline. Put two hotels side by side with their prices. Pick Harbor Inn, and The Seaview stays, grayed, with why you ruled it out.

Add the Friday train, bib pickup on Saturday and the race on Sunday. Only what you picked counts toward the total.

The Harborline leg of the race weekend: two nights, Harbor Inn picked at $205 a night, The Seaview ruled out on price, the Friday train picked, and $591 committed.

What you didn't have to do

  • Put each run on the calendar one at a time.
  • Type your run's numbers in by hand.
  • Add up what you ate against what you ran.
  • Keep the hotel, the train and the race in three different places.

Harborline, its half marathon and every screen above are invented examples on real Junior screens. Fitness, Health and Trips are apps you turn on inside Junior.
